Hello Creative Friends,
I got my Creating Keepsakes Magazine this week and I saw they had some candy pencils similar to the ones I made last year so I thought I’d dig out a photo of those for those who missed them. I made and posted them last March on my old blog for a Kindergarten Graduation idea but I thought Back To School was a good time to share them again. Mine uses Rolo candies for the eraser. For some I used the pretty colored ones they have out in the Spring but the regular gold covered ones are nice too.
By the way, my husband ordered that magazine recently for me without telling me as he thought I’d like it and I thought it was so sweet of him, but I really wish these craft magazines would come up with something I haven’t done before or something that hasn’t been floating around the internet for years. Am I the only one that gets aggravated with the whole craft magazine industry lately? There’s never anything new!
Sorry, this is the only photo I could find of this project. These are rolled candy (Spree and Certs) wrapped with crimped cardstock. You could use any type of rolled candy. The erasers as I mentioned are Rolo candies, the pencil points Hershey’s Kisses. I stamped the wording on the card stock first before I ran it through the crimper. You don’t really have to run them through the crimper. They still look cute without it. I just thought it was a fun way to do them.
Just cut your card stock to fit whatever candy you use, wrap and adhere. Add a contrasting color of card stock to make the “metal” piece around the top. I crimped that piece as well but you could also just score some lines on the cardstock to get that lined effect on your “metal”. Then attach your candy tips and erasers.
These would be great for your Back to School Women’s events for a fun favor. You can add whatever saying or verse that would be appropriate. I’ve gotten a lot of email about this project. It’s always fun to hear how many people have made and how they’ve used them. I always get asked about what to glue the Hershey Kisses and Rolos with. I think I used a couple small glue dots on each. It’s been awhile since I made them. You could probably use Sticky-Strip. Some have asked about glue guns but because it’s candy you’d probably only want to use a low-temp glue gun on them.
As I said in my original post about this project–the possibilities are endless for these. Think of just the pencil color possibilities alone. A red pencil might make a cute teacher gift. You could make “birthday” pencils, “get well”, etc. Hope you have fun with the idea!
